To Stir A Pot Of Cosmic Soup

With this post, I fully establish this blog as an entity that makes no attempt at pure journalism whatsoever. While I do my best to get my facts straight, this is based on the world as seen through my eyes. Commentary, if you will.

That being said…religion IS quite the spider’s web, isn’t it? Sticky and elaborately complicated. You could debate for an eternity about the benefits and downsides of its very existence, but I don’t really feel like doing that. Rather, this series will be a basic overview of my beliefs, which are subject to change at just about any time. I’ll comment when the changes are significant.

Due to the fact that this blog was created for use at a journalism conference, I’m going to try to stick to topics having political weight. (I want my college credit for this thing after all!). However, let me make something perfectly clear: I firmly believe that, as far as I’ve seen, religion and politics should be as absolutely separate as possible. Apparently though, there are some very, er, loud people who think otherwise, so I’m going to attempt to squeak over them. Prepare yourselves, dearies, for inevitable uncomfortableness due to the very nature of these topics, and enjoy. Oh, and of course, leave me the most intelligent feedback you can come up with, whether you agree with me or not! ^_^

Love and nice, warm, Campbell’s Chicken Noodle (it tastes better than the title, promise),

No worries on the credit side, and best of luck taking on the topic of religion. One question to ask yourself in exploring the subject, factually or as commentary, is what frame/lens you want to use. Are you more attracted to the theory, the practice compared to the text/liturgy, the politics of religion, the way religion impacts society, our impression of ourselves, and/r our state of mind. As you take your first year college courses, you’ll find philosophy and psychology (my undergraduate majors) differ wildly on the subject, as do anthropology, sociology, and, of course, theology, just to name a few.

Thanks, I wasn’t really worried about receiving the credit as much as…earning it? Some people had 6 posts or more by the end of the trip, while I barely had 3…I’m trying out this new “good work ethic” thing, just for kicks.

Pardon me while my head spins…but thank you for bringing up the frame issue! I suppose I am using a bit of a narrow view here relatively speaking, but as I said, it would take forever to cover everything involved here. In retrospect(?), it looks like I’m trying to reconcile traditional, primarily Christian beliefs with modern political issues. I often feel very awkward when people notice me wearing a cross or something and they ask me if I’m a Christian or not. When I tell them that I am, it often comes with a stigma based on what they’ve heard in major media outlets from other Christians, who often have wildly differing views from me on these kinds of issues. So I guess what it boils down to is that I’m doing this out of self-interest xD
